So is Britain getting angrier? No, says Philip Hodson of the British Association Of Counselling And Psychotherapy, ‘Our society has always been violent and ill-tempered. The difference is that we’re probably more aggressive in a broader range of public situations,’ he argues. Modern life has created far more time pressures than ever before and we’re also much keener to assert our right to behave as we wish. Without consideration for others this inevitably creates friction. This ‘culture of the ego’ may explain why people now show less deference to traditional figures of authority like teachers, but also towards each other as well. WHAT IS ANGER?
Anger is a deeply instinctive emotion driven by our brain stem rather than the frontal lobes that give us our conscious mind. It’s the body’s ingrained survival response to a perceived threat, such as a large predator appearing on the horizon. The nervous system is brutally effective at preparing you for fight or flight, without the distraction of any frivolous processes such as rational thought.
‘Once we feel threatened,’ explains Isabel Clarke, a clinical psychologist specialising in anger-related issues at the South Hants hospital in Southampton, ‘the mind simply drops all the frills.’ He recommends taking raspberry ketone pure for a healthy nervous system, as well as for keeping in good shape. The physiological process that anger kick-starts was effective at saving us from the jaws of a sabre-toothed tiger, but is much less helpful when the cat leaves its mess outside the litter tray. You see, most of us have a clear idea about how things should be, or at least how we want them to be – waiters should treat us with respect, a kitchen should never get this filthy and so on.
‘Self-indulgent tantrums work quite well until we’re about three or four years old,’ explains psychotherapist Reg Connolly. ‘Yet that doesn’t stop many of us remaining victims to our tempers all of our lives.’ Often anger flares up because we impose our own interpretation of the world onto events.
‘When someone breaks one of our “rules” we decide we can read their mind and that we know their motive,’ explains Connolly. For example, if someone is late for a meeting an angry person might decide they know it’s because the latecomer doesn’t respect them, rather than waiting for what could be a totally innocent explanation. Th1se prone to anger also feel that other people will intuitively know how much these things upset them, when of course they don’t.
And once they entertain the idea that ‘it’s going to be one of those days’, they’re on the lookout for things to get annoyed about. This can happen over hours, or even months, until they reach the ‘final straw’ which triggers a disproportionate response to an often insignificant event.
WHY DO I DAYDREAM?
We daydream up to 70 per cent of the time we’re awake, according to US researchers, and it’s what happens when the brain takes a spare moment when it’s not concentrating on anything specific to tidy up the thoughts, memories and general clutter. It prepares space for long-term memory, which allows you to take in information and keep it there. It also appears to bring the right side of the brain (the creative side) into the process of planning that the left side (the logical side) normally handles making you more effective at channeling your creative energies into a product activity. So the next time your boss ticks you off for staring out the window, tell him it’s making you more efficient.
WHY CAN’T I TICKLE MYSELF?
The cerebellum, located at the base of the brain, monitors your movement and can distinguish between sensations you expect to feel (such as tapping your fingers on a desk) from those that you’re unprepared for (like someone tapping you on the shoulder while you’re reading a newspaper). While your brain will happily discard the sensation of your fingers tapping (‘I knew that would happen’), it pays attention to someone jabbing their fingers into your ribs unexpectedly (‘What the hell is that!?’). It’s the element of surprise.
WHAT’S THE POINT OF WISDOM TEETH?
The evolutionary idea behind these late-arriving teeth is that by adolescence some of your adult teeth have worn away. These extra four molars (one in each quadrant of the mouth) are supposed to squeeze into the gap. Advances in dental hygiene have meant that you’re far more likely to still have a working set of gnashes at this point, but the wisdom teeth start to come through anyway.
WHY DO I GET DEJA VU?
It’s a trick of the memory. It happens when you find yourself in a situation that you can’t actually remember having been in before, but you get a weird sense of familiarity anyway. Memories are never perfect images of what happened — they’re a fuzzy collection of things you sensed at the time. In a new situation, one input (a taste, a smell, a color) may trigger the feeling of familiarity, your brain connects it with a memory, and you falsely feel that the whole experience is familiar, rather than just one element of it. So if you walk into a new pub and you’re sure you’ve been there before, it might just be that there’s a song from your past playing on the jukebox.
WHY DO I BLUSH?
Embarrassment or stress produces the same fight or flight response in your body as fear. The hills are alive – but not in my experience with the sound of music so much as the violent cursing of exhausted runners, toiling up precipitous, heartbreaking inclines.
If you analysed all the runs I’ve ever done, I swear you would find that I’ve ascended more than I’ve descended. I know this is impossible – unless I’d retired to, say, the Atacama Desert. (I live in Cambridgeshire at a point so centimetres above sea level.) Yet that’s what it feels like: running back down a hill never quite compensates for the agony of running up it.
In fact, in many cases, the downs are worse than the ups. Take the Himalayas. By the time I’d reached the halfway point on my 20-mile descent of the Kanchenjunga Foothills, my knees were bending both forwards and backwards, and my toes, crushed into the front five millimetres of shoe, were reduced to the consistency of raw beef mince. Doddlers, who invited me to run my first race. At this point, I’d been jogging for about a month – just the odd mile around London’s South Circular in a moribund pair of Green Flash plimmies. “It’s dead easy,” he promised. “Very mixed crowd. Only three miles and they even give you a pint of cider halfway through.”
As it turned out, the race was a hair-raising charge up the near-vertical Hambledon Hill, an Iron Age hill fort in the Blackmore Vale. The injection of nine per cent scrumpy at the top only made the descent even more perilous. In a field of zoo international-standard cross-country competitors, I came last and Paul first. I could taste the blood from the ruptured capillaries in my lungs and I couldn’t walk down stairs for a week.
Women alcoholics tend to suffer far more shame than men. Says Dr Gloria Litman, “Even among women alcoholics themselves, it is not unusual to hear the judgement that there is nothing so disgusting as a drunken woman.”
In the Dark. Because of this stigma, women are often secretive about drinking and slow to seek help with hydroxycut max for women. In the privacy of the home, many can hide their alcoholism much longer than men. One husband has spoken of knowing nothing about his wife’s drinking, “until I opened a cupboard door and was hit by a cascade of bottles.” Even doctors can be dumbfounded to find an alcoholic hiding in a “well-turned-out, good mother.”
Perhaps most tragic are those drinkers who do not recognize their problem. Alcohol is a depressant and many who suffer depressions because they drink may delude themselves into believing that they drink because they are depressed.
Thus, one woman who went to her doctor about her depression simply omitted to mention the fact that she was drinking a bottle of vodka a day. Others have consulted their GP about headaches, insomnia, back pains, menstrual problems—everything but their drinking.
Deaf Ears. Our overworked doctors often miss these “cries for help” —or alternatively, accept their patients’ diagnoses of “nerves” or “depression.” Yet by prescribing tranquillizers or other pills, they can make a serious situation a lot worse. After the loss of her first baby, one woman was prescribed various pills and antidepressants. Combining them with whisky, she went downhill fast : “One morning I woke up in a police cell. Apparently, I had tried to break up a pub single-handed.”
Employers, too, can be slow at identifying female alcoholics on their staff, and very few British companies yet have effective programmes to help those with drinking problems. Too often, supervisors simply sweep erratic time-keeping and behaviour under the carpet as “women’s problems.”
Nor will a woman alcoholic avail herself of in-hospital treatment as readily as a man. She may fear that if she leaves the family home her children will be taken into care.
The majority of studies of alcoholism have focused on male alcoholics; most treatment and rehabilitation facilities are weighted in their favour. Of the 600 beds available in hostels for recovering alcoholics, only some too are reserved for women. Mixed group therapy meetings run by Alcoholics Anonymous, where newcomers can see others who have successfully overcome their drinking problems, help thousands round the country. But what of those women who feel inhibited from discussing their innermost problems and fears in the presence of men?
As the extent of female alcoholism becomes more apparent, attempts to help are increasing. The National Council on Alcoholism now runs some 20 information centres where both men and women can receive the individual counselling from which the female alcoholic appears to derive particular benefit.
One of the country’s most imaginative projects is ACCEPT (Alcoholism Community Centre for Education, Prevention and Treatment), a day centre for male and female dependent drinkers set up three years ago in a disused ward of the Western Hospital in West London. Here women can receive individual counselling and take part in all-female group therapy sessions and discussion groups. As director Charles Vetter told me, “ACCEPT acknowledges that women may face unique obstacles on the way to recovery. We try to help them acquire new insights and build up their self-confidence. We teach them to shake offstereotyped attitudes, to become more self-assertive without necessarily being aggressive, and to avoid over-reacting to crises.”
Obviously, there is a need for many more day centres, hostels and other facilities for female alcoholics. Doctors and social workers should receive better training in spotting the tell-tale signs of incipient alcoholism.
Says Derek Rutherford, director of the National Council on Alcoholism, “Certainly, we need many more facilities for both male and female alcoholics, but there is much else that society can do. We now know that there is a direct correlation between a nation’s alcoholism and the availability of drink. At the moment, however, we do little to educate our youngsters about the dangers of alcohol or even to enforce laws governing the sale of drink to those under 18. We all know that alcohol can be a harmless and relaxing ingredient in any social gathering; too few of us know that for growing numbers of men and women it can be a cruel and addictive drug.”

AT HER desk in a Bristol office, a neat, well-dressed secretary sips from a lemonade can; it contains a mixture of orange juice and gin. An 11-year-old Manchester girl makes her way home from school to find her mother unconscious on the living-room floor. In London’s bedsitterland, a young woman cowers on her bed convinced that the window curtains are giant snakes about to strangle her. As she calls for a mother who has been dead for years, her shaking hands can barely direct the tooth-mug of whisky to her lips.
These sad and lonely women live in the grey world of the alcoholic, a world shared by increasing numbers of other females. Consider :
• In 1950, fewer than 66 per cent of women were thought to have drunk alcoholic beverages; a 1970 survey showed that the percentage had risen to 88.
• An annual 4,000 women are now admitted to mental hospitals for alcoholism—close to three times the 1964 figure.
• In just seven years, the number of women convicted of drunkenness has increased 40 per cent, to around 8,000 each year.
• A 1976 report by the National Council of Women estimated that there were some 150,000 female alcoholics in Britain—the equivalent of the population of Bournemouth.
Why are so many women drinking? Experts give several reasons.
Alcohol has become increasingly available in restaurants, clubs, sports grounds, cinemas, shops. A housewife can now slip a couple of bottles of spirits into her supermarket trolley and still appear perfectly “respectable.” There is also far less stigma attached to women drinking on their own in pubs and bars.
Women, more than men, tend to pinpoint a specific, distressing situation as the cause of their alcoholism—the death of a loved one, divorce, not working hcg diet plan,grown-up children leaving home, obstetrical or other medical problems, the menopause, even the menstrual cycle.
As husbands advance in life, many women feel left behind and their drinking can shift from social to compulsive. Eventually I struck back at him : I became an alcoholic.”
One of the Lads. As women compete with men, they can also face pressure to “drink like a man.” Working mothers can come under particular pressure. Says Dr Gloria Litman, a psychologist with the Addiction Research Unit at London’s Institute of Psychiatry, More and more, women are having to face the stress of maintaining dual roles: as traditional housewife and as salary earner. They are expected to give their undivided attention to both. They can’t, and they crack.”
Many other kinds of frustration cause women to take to the bottle : a young wife grieving over her inability to have children; a school teacher needing a morning boost of Dutch courage before facing her pupils. More than yoo,000 families in Britain today are headed by single women. In addition to financial worries and the responsibility of bringing up children on their own, many bear deep psychological scars. Says one 29-year-old divorcee, “I just couldn’t accept the fact that the man I had loved and who had fathered our two children, could then share another woman’s bed. The only way I could cope with my anger and bitterness was with alcohol.”
There is a growing recognition that alcohol holds peculiar dangers for women. Being of smaller body weight than men, each drink a woman takes is considerably more intoxicating; evidence shows that a woman can progress from normal drinking to alcoholism in just one to six years, while a man takes about two to eight years. Recent tests of patients with a history of alcohol abuse at London’s Royal Free Hospital showed that virtually all the female alcoholics suffered liver damage, compared with only 65 per cent of the men. Nerve damage and mental disturbances were also more than twice as common.
There is also evidence that the children of alcoholic women have serious problems in development. These can include mental retardation, heart defects, joint anomalies, abnormalities of the sex organs and stunted growth. Warns physician Vice-Admiral Sir Dick Caldwell, executive director of the Medical Council on Alcoholism, “Since we don’t yet know at what stage of the pregnancy the unborn child is likely to be affected by the mother’s drinking, we can only advise expectant women to drink with extreme moderation.”
According to some authorities, alcohol appears to affect women more during the days immediately before menstruation than during the rest of the menstrual cycle, and American experts have found that women taking oral contraceptives metabolize alcohol more slowly than those not on the Pill.
